The conference, which focused on Social Cohesion and Livable Cities, was opened by M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the Governor of the BMA alongside Dr Gwang-Jo Kim, the Director of UNESCO Bangkok, Mayor Parpat Poocharoen of Lamphun Municipality and Mayor Pongsak Yingchoncharoen of Yala City Municipality,.
City representatives from Bangladesh, Botswana, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Maldives, Mozambique, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, Sudan, Thailand, Turkey and Uruguay took part in presentations and workshops over two days exploring a range of subjects such as urban inclusion, data innovation, resource management and youth-mobilization. The program closed with discussions on the revision of the 10 point plan of action aligning APCAD’s future work with the Sustainable Development Goals and New Urban Agenda.
The APCAD was officially founded by UNESCO during the “Regional Conference of Cities for an Inclusive Urban Society” held in Bangkok, Thailand, on 3-4 August 2006, the long-term objective of which is to provide local authorities with an operational programme that will allow a more efficient implementation of policies for a greater social inclusion of their city dwellers in the full respect of their human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, or any other field of public life.
